Solitary Waves

I wanted to write a song our Kiva could sing. She spent every night hiding behind her piano and never got the chance to really strut her stuff. One day, after reading "Tuesdays with Maury", I knew the song I had to write for Kiva.

In the book there is a story about a little frolicking wave who sees the shore approaching and witnesses the waves in front of it crashing into droplets against that shore. The little wave becomes afraid, until the wave behind it taps it on the shoulder and says: "Don't be afraid little wave. We are not JUST waves. We are all part of the ocean."

That story so describes the message of our music that I knew I had to turn it into a song. And who better than Kiva to sing it? In live performances I would have Kiva leave her piano and take centre stage. When I wrote the song I imagined Kiva (who has a thousand voices) would choose her clearest, sweetest voice to sing the song. But no. Kiva would take the stage with a wide-legged stance and belt out the song in such a gravelly, raunchy voice that the timbers would shake. I loved when Kiva sang this song.

Kiva left the province to pursue a solo career before this album was recorded. That left me with the intimidating job of giving personality to these vocals. It is easier to write for someone else to sing... that way the ego doesn't get in the way. Perhaps I'll hand this song over to one of the other gals. We'll see what happens on stage...

Lyrics

they're gonna tell you freedom's coming
gonna tell you what you want to hear
they're gonna tell you the sky's full of angels
and they're all drawing near
make you deals in the dead of night
make you dream of a brave new light...

we are all like nervous children
on our first day of school
scared and innocent little lambs
clinging to the golden rule..
feeling stripped down to the bone,
waiting for our heroes to take us home

we are not solitary waves
crashing against the shore
we're the skyline, we're the water, we're the fishes, we're the trees
even stripped down to the bone, we're not alone
even stripped down to the bone
we're not alone

If a leaf falls from a tree
we've shed another skin
seasons change and days fly by
all part of the circle's spin
we must be what we're meant to be...
part of you
part of me...

we are not solitary waves
crashing against the shore
we're the skyline, we're the water, we're the fishes, we're the trees
even stripped down to the bone, we're not alone
even stripped down to the bone
we're not alone

Wholly
